The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Sport Division is saddened by the passing away of the talented para-rower, Lifa Hlongwa, who recently passed away. Hlongwa was a UJ Sport student-athlete in both the Rowing and the Sports for Students with Disabilities Clubs.

“It is with profound sadness that we bid farewell to Lifa, a young man of incredible talent and boundless determination. Lifa was more than just an athlete; he embodied the spirit of resilience and excellence that we strive to nurture in every rower. His journey was marked by a relentless pursuit of greatness, unwavering commitment to his sport, and a heart full of humility,” said Mr. Sizwe Ndlovu, Manager: UJ Rowing Club.
Coach Ndlovu said that he had the privilege of coaching Hlongwa and witnessing firsthand his growth, dedication, and passion for rowing. According to the Coach, Hlongwa’s remarkable achievements speak volumes about his character and potential. “He proudly represented South Africa on the international stage, competing at the Gavirate International Para Regatta in Italy,” he said, “where his performance reflected both his skill and unbreakable spirit. In 2022/2023, Lifa earned a prestigious UJ Sport award, an indication of his hard work and the respect he commanded from his peers and the rowing community.”
Ndlovu added, “Beyond his accolades, Lifa inspired everyone around him with his warmth, positivity, and quiet strength. He taught us all the power of perseverance and grace, reminding us that true champions are those who rise above challenges with dignity and courage.”
Over the years, Hlongwa was a committed student-athlete who oozed confidence on and off the waters, having competed in local and global competitions. The 5th year BCom Economics and Econometrics student competed in his first international event during the 16th International Para-Rowing Regatta in Italy in May 2022, finishing in 14th place.
In 2023, Hlongwa went on to significantly improve 10 places higher, finishing in 4th place in the 2000 meter B final race during the 17th edition of the same tournament after drawing lessons from his maiden appearance in the competition. This race is a traditional sporting event in Italy, organised on Varese Lake in Gavirate. There, he showcased his talent competing against young internationals from Italy, France, Great Britain, Tunisia, Poland, Australia, Israel, Thailand, Canada, and Uzbekistan.
During his stay at UJ, Hlongwa was nominated for the 2023 UJ Sportsman of the Year Award after competing in three international regattas. He won a gold medal in the 2000 meter race during the African Championships in Tunisia.
In the same year (2023), Hlongwa also participated in the World Rowing Championship in Belgrade, Serbia, finishing in 16th place in the 2000 meter race.
“As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind. Lifa’s memory will live on in the hearts of his teammates, coaches, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. We will remember him with love and respect. May his soul rest in peace,” said Ndlovu.
