The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) College of Business and Economics (CBE) recently hosted a special luncheon to honour its Accounting Feud champions after they claimed victory in the prestigious SAICA and Absa-sponsored Wits vs UJ Accounting Feud.

The event recognised the team’s outstanding achievement after defeating the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) to lift the coveted trophy in the annual competition, which showcases accounting excellence, critical thinking, teamwork and communication among aspiring Chartered Accountants.
Supported by SAICA and Absa, the Accounting Feud is a quiz and debate-style competition that challenges students to apply their technical accounting knowledge, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills in a dynamic, high-pressure environment. It provides a valuable platform for students to demonstrate their abilities beyond the classroom while engaging with peers from another leading South African university.
Professor Ben Marx, Director of the School of Accounting, said the School was extremely proud of the UJ ABASA Chapter and the great work they do, and the remarkable achievement of the team that won the Accounting Feud debate.
Professor Tankiso Moloi, Executive Dean of the College of Business and Economics, said the luncheon reflected the College’s commitment to recognising excellence and preparing graduates for leadership in the profession.
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication, discipline, and talent of our students. They represented UJ with distinction, demonstrating not only technical excellence but also teamwork, professionalism and the confidence to perform under pressure. We are incredibly proud of what they have accomplished.”
He said the College is committed to creating opportunities that enable students to translate academic knowledge into professional competence.
“Competitions such as the Accounting Feud complement classroom learning by encouraging students to think critically, communicate effectively and solve complex business challenges. These experiences are invaluable in preparing graduates who are ready to lead with integrity and make meaningful contributions to the accounting profession.”

The luncheon also highlighted the College’s continued success in accounting education. Earlier this year, UJ’s School of Accounting achieved an 86% first-time pass rate in the January 2026 SAICA Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC), with 249 graduates completing the professional examination, one of the strongest performances.
“We are extremely proud of the ABASA UJ Debating Team. Their achievement is a true reflection of the outstanding excellence of our Accountancy@UJ students, said Professor Ahmed Mohammadali Haji.
CBE also acknowledged the continued support of SAICA and Absa in promoting excellence in accounting education and providing platforms that inspire and develop the next generation of Chartered Accountants.
Prof Moloi concluded: “By recognising outstanding student achievement, CBE continues to foster a culture of excellence, ensuring that its graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills and ethical foundation to make a meaningful contribution to South Africa’s economy and society.”
