The Gauteng Golden Fireballs closed their 2026 Telkom Netball League (TNL) season on a high note, securing the runners-up position after a hard-fought and resilient campaign. Facing adversity early on, the team pushed through the tournament without several senior players who departed for global missions overseas.
The 2026 TNL highlighted the incredible depth of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Netball Club, with the Orange Army players featuring in four provincial teams.

The thrilling season ended on Monday evening, 15 June 2026, where the Fireballs put up a brave fight but ultimately fell short in a 46-32 defeat to the Free State Crinums at the University of Pretoria’s Rembrandt Hall.
Despite the roster disruptions, the Fireballs proved their championship pedigree. The team, comprising 8 UJ players and 2 staff members in management, maintained an impressive momentum throughout the tournament, finishing the season with a total of 10 wins and 5 losses. Their path to the final included:
- Winning 8 out of 12 round-robin games.
- Securing a dominant victory in an invitational match against the Zambezi Eagles.
- Cruising through a high-stakes semifinal match to book their spot in the final.
“We experienced a disturbed season with some of our senior players leaving to play overseas during the league,” said Golden Fireballs Assistant Coach Bongiwe Msomi. “However, the team fought hard with the players that remained. Their hard work showed because the team went past the semifinal, which is incredible. It was a really good season, although we are disappointed that we could not defend the title.”
Msomi, who also serves as the UJ Netball Club Manager and Head Coach, has been a driving force behind the scenes, ensuring her influence on the players extends far beyond the university competitive environment.
