Women`s Month: August 2022

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is excited to celebrate Women’s Month this August 2022. The institution will host numerous events and seminars focusing on women’s empowerment under the national theme:  “Women’s Socio-Economic Rights and Empowerment: Building Back Better for Women’s Improved Resilience”.

Annually, 9 August is commemorated as Women’s Day in South Africa, and the rest of the month as National Women’s Month. The month provides the country with an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements and the significant role that women from all walks of life have played and continue to do so in South Africa. On 9 August 1956, more than 20 000 women from all walks of life united in a mass demonstration at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. They protested against the unjust passed laws enforced on women in South Africa.

Although we continue to celebrate, the majority of women still do not have access to opportunities that empower them and their communities. Therefore, we must start reflecting on the challenges and expose women to opportunities that will positively contribute to their empowerment.

“When you empower a woman, you empower the whole world” – Ruth Mumbi, founder and national coordinator, Bunge La Wamama, Kenya.
