University of Johannesburg (UJ) Professor Tien-Chien Jen from the Department of Mechanical Engineering recently engaged with undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students at the School of Flexible Electronics at Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in China.

A member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), Prof Jen shared insights from his academic and research experience during a panel discussion with young researchers working in the interdisciplinary field of flexible electronics.

The engagement focused on academic development, research and the importance of international exposure in preparing the next generation of researchers.

Prof Jen encouraged students to make the most of their university experience by developing a strong academic foundation, pursuing rigorous research and remaining open to interdisciplinary approaches. He emphasised that a solid grounding in fundamental knowledge is particularly important for undergraduate students as they prepare for more specialised academic and research work.

During the question-and-answer session, Prof Jen also shared advice on international academic development. He encouraged students who have opportunities to study or conduct research abroad to embrace cross-cultural engagement and develop the communication skills required to participate effectively in the international research community.

He highlighted the value of exposure to different research environments and perspectives, noting that international engagement can broaden young researchers’ academic horizons and contribute to a wider understanding of scientific research and innovation.

For undergraduate students, Prof Jen stressed the importance of consistent academic development, encouraging them to remain focused on their studies, strengthen their professional knowledge and build a strong foundation for future research and career development.
