The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Senior Women’s Football Team has officially announced the acquisition of five talented youngsters ahead of the 2026 national women’s league season, Hollywoodbets Super League (HBSL). Following the departure of several players in recent months, Head Coach Nthabeleng Modiko has moved to reinforce the squad with a strategic mix of defensive stability and offensive flair.
New additions to the “Orange Army”
The recruitment drive focuses on strengthening the core of the team, bringing in two defenders, two midfielders, and a forward. Notably, most of the new arrivals join as student-athletes, further aligning with the university’s commitment to academic and athletic excellence.
Defensive reinforcements: Kutlwano Maphane joins the backline, bringing a commanding presence and confidence on the ball. She is joined by the versatile Charmaine Sibiya, whose adaptability is expected to provide Coach Modiko with multiple tactical options.
Midfield creativity: The midfield receives a significant boost with the inclusion of Lindelwa Mabuza, a national Under-20 representative known for her exceptional dribbling skills. Joining her is Asanda Mchunu, who arrives with a high-profile pedigree. Mchunu’s experience spans the HBSL with Ezemvelo FC, as well as international caps at U-17, U-20, and call ups from senior Banyana Banyana levels.
Attacking power: To lead the line, UJ has signed Mpho Dlamini. Characterized as a fast and strong striker, Dlamini is expected to provide the clinical finishing required to convert the team’s creative play into goals.
Ambitions for the 2026 campaign
Reflecting on the previous year, where UJ finished 7th in the HBSL standings, Coach Modiko is optimistic about the trajectory of the team. While the final league position in 2025 was lower than desired, the coach pointed toward individual growth and accolades as a foundation for the upcoming season.
“Expectations for this season are high. We want to be in a position to push the top four teams and be counted among them at the end of the campaign,” says Coach Modiko. “University championships remain a priority for us; we want to continue bringing trophies and success back to UJ.”
With a reinforced roster and a clear focus on a top-four finish, the “Orange Army” is gearing up for a competitive year in the league and other cup competitions.
