The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is strengthening its research, innovation and technology capabilities through its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with GPU infrastructure equipment valued at US$224,492.54 transferred to the University to support the growing UJ UniPod community.
The infrastructure will further enhance the capabilities of UJ UniPod, South Africa’s first UNDP-supported University Innovation Pod, which was launched earlier this year to accelerate innovation and entrepreneurship at the University.
The UniPod provides students, researchers and emerging entrepreneurs with access to advanced technologies, mentorship, incubation and opportunities to develop solutions to real-world challenges. Its capabilities span areas including artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, 3D printing and prototyping.
The addition of GPU infrastructure will expand the technical capabilities available through the UniPod, supporting research, innovation, experimentation and technology development across a range of applications.
The enhanced infrastructure will also enable UJ UniPod to participate in the AI for Public Good Challenge, initiated by UNDP, creating opportunities for multidisciplinary university teams to explore how AI and other emerging technologies can be applied to practical challenges and generate solutions with societal impact.
Prof Refilwe Phaswana-Mafuya, UJ Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research & Innovation, said the contribution would strengthen the University’s ability to support its growing innovation community.
“This support significantly strengthens our capacity to serve the UJ UniPod community and advance our innovation and research ecosystem,” said Prof Phaswana-Mafuya.
The infrastructure will enable UJ to connect stakeholders facing real and unresolved operational challenges with multidisciplinary university teams that bring together expertise, creativity and a commitment to developing impactful solutions within a structured and supported environment.
The development builds on UJ’s partnership with UNDP through the Timbuktoo initiative, under which the UniPod was established as a platform to foster innovation, entrepreneurship and technology development.
The launch of the UJ UniPod marked an important step in creating a dedicated environment where students, researchers and innovators can access technologies and support to develop and test new ideas. The enhanced infrastructure will build on this foundation by increasing the computing capabilities available to the UniPod community.
The partnership also strengthens collaboration between UJ and UNDP around innovation, research, entrepreneurship and the responsible application of emerging technologies to address societal challenges.
As the UniPod continues to grow, the expanded infrastructure will provide greater opportunities for students, researchers and innovators to collaborate across disciplines, experiment with emerging technologies and develop solutions that respond to challenges facing society and industry.
