The University of Johannesburg (UJ) asserted their dominance in the 2026 Men’s Varsity Football tournament on Friday evening, August 28, securing local bragging rights with a clinical 2-0 victory over rivals Wits University at Wits Stadium.

The highly anticipated Round 4 encounter began with high intensity, both sides trading blows early on. Host team Wits refused to back down on home turf, pushing forward aggressively in the opening exchanges. However, UJ’s defensively resolute backline – anchored by the defensive trio of Koketso Mathidza, Yasidu Lifa, and Ofentse Motlhabi – thwarted every Wits’ offensive move.

UJ broke the deadlock late in the first half when Sandile Nkosi unleashed a thunderous strike from the edge of the eighteen-yard box, leaving the keeper helpless and putting the visitors ahead.

The dynamic shifted after the break as UJ adopted a disciplined defensive block to protect their lead. Wits capitalized on the spatial territory, mounting sustained pressure through both wings.
