In true Joburg sports camaraderie, fans from both the University of Johannesburg and Wits University filled the UJ Rugby Stadium to capacity during the FNB Varsity Cup derby on Monday night, 25 March 2024. The action on the pitch mirrored the electric atmosphere, with both teams trading tries and conversions from the opening whistle of the round six encounter.
The pressure was on UJ from the start, as Wits raced to a 12-0 lead with early tries. However, the home team refused to give up. A well-constructed try by Sechaba Dlamini and a successful conversion sparked a comeback. By halftime, UJ had clawed their way back to a 16-12 lead.
The second half continued the high-scoring trend. UJ capitalised on their momentum, extending their lead with another try and a penalty kick. Despite a late consolation try from Wits, UJ held firm to secure a crucial victory and end their winless streak.
Supporters’ and players reactions and reflections
UJ fans were ecstatic after their hard-fought victory, especially considering their previous losing streak. First-time attendee Nomthandazo Patonisi highlighted the joyful atmosphere, a sentiment echoed by UJ alumnus Nathaniel Michaels who praised the team’s comeback spirit.
Despite the loss, Wits supporters remained positive. Cheerleader Naledi Ntsele commended UJ’s performance and the overall energy, while Matoti Buthelezi emphasised the friendly rivalry between the universities, calling it “always a great time.”
Players Malgas and Philip Apea-Adu expressed gratitude to the UJ community and applauded their teammates. “We had to believe in our abilities. We played for the University pride – we have to do the same in the last game to keep those smiles our supporters’ faces,” said Apea-Adu.
“Firstly, I give glory to God. As the team, we wanted to show the people what we can do. We have to replicate the same energy into the UWC game,” said Malgas.
UJ player Conor van Buuren’s family members who were at the stadium said, “We are here to support our boy and the team. It was a great game, it’s nice to get a win against Wits. It’s tough to watch UJ lose the previous games, but I think they have learned from that and they will get better. They need to play harder to avoid relegation.”
Upcoming fixture outcome
Coach Jonathan Mokuena’s FNB UJ still face uncertainty despite holding onto 7th position on the log. They must secure another win against the University of the Western Cape, currently at the bottom, to qualify for the promotion-relegation playoffs against FNB Varsity Shield teams. This crucial match is scheduled for Monday, April 8, 2024, at the UJ Rugby Stadium.
