The future looked bright at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), as the Science Centre welcomed learners to what promises to be a fruitful year of learning. On Saturday, 26 January 2013, the school opened its doors to more than 757 learners, their parents and teachers to explore the centre.
The opening presented an opportunity for the new learners to familiarise themselves with the campus and the lecturers who will be helping them to create a better future for themselves.
Grade 10 to12 attend classes on Saturdays and during the school holidays to engage in Mathematics, Life and Environmental Sciences, Physical Sciences and English for better results.
Mukelwa Buyeya and Keitumetse Sithole are some of the Grade 11 students who have improved their performance considerably since joining the centre in 2012.
“Ever since joining the school, we were able to improve our marks. We obtained distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Science and English. We are learning so much from the school, that now we are even ahead of the rest of our class, every new thing they learn, we have already learnt it at the Science Centre,” the two learners said.
Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof Kinta Burger captured the spirit of the event with some wise words for the learners.
“You’re on the frontline and everybody’s watching. You know it is serious. People are raising their expectations; I urge you to go on, and feed them. This is your moment so go out and claim it,” said Prof Burger.
Lecturers at the centre also play a major role in uplifting the learners’ performance.
