In an atmosphere brimming with enthusiasm and hope, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosted the inauguration ceremony for its newly elected Student Representative Council (SRC) on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at the Bunting Road Campus. This event marks a significant milestone in the University’s history, highlighting the essential role of student leadership and involvement in shaping the campus community. With a firm dedication to championing student interests and driving positive change, the newly appointed SRC members are ready to embark on their journey of service and representation for the 2024 academic year.
The inauguration ceremony, brought together faculty, staff, and students to witness the formal induction of the SRC members into their roles. Speaking at the event, UJ’s Senior Director Sport and Acting Senior Director for Student Affairs Nomsa Mahlangu congratulated the elected representatives and highlighted the significance of their leadership roles in enhancing the student experience.
“It is a great honour that I stand before you to celebrate the inauguration of the SRC. This is a momentous occasion that marks the beginning of a new chapter in your lives as student leaders at UJ. The SRC plays a pivotal role in the University community. You have a responsibility towards the students that have elected you. You are the voice of the student body. Through your leadership and dedication, you will shape the student experience at UJ,” Mahlangu said.
Addressing the audience, the newly appointed SRC President, Billy Malotane, outlined his vision for the upcoming term, stressing the importance of inclusivity, transparency, and accountability. With a diverse array of initiatives in the pipeline, the SRC is determined to tackle pressing issues, amplify student voices, and cultivate a culture of collaboration and unity across the university community.
Nel Ledwaba, who played the role of MC for the inauguration shared words of encouragement for the incoming student leaders. He shared the importance of a mutually respectful relationship between student leaders and the institution.
“There is a big difference between student leadership that existed prior to 94 and the post-94 leadership. The former, due to the climate they led in, needed to be radical and aggressive. They had to use force at times, as there often weren’t clear lines of communication and access to key resources. Today’s leadership, is about providing solutions. Today’s society requires leaders that can provide solutions. This is an important take-away for today’s SRC. Remember, how you conduct yourself, is important, and it will influence positively other students,” Ledwaba said.
The inauguration ceremony prompted students to consider the significance of the SRC and its advocacy for their interests. Numerous students expressed confidence in the new SRC and their aspirations for a more inclusive and vibrant campus community.
With this SRC inauguration ceremony, UJ enters a new era marked by student empowerment, leadership, and unity. With the SRC leading the way with a vision of progress and inclusivity, the University is primed for heightened excellence and innovation.
