Defined by integrity.
That was how the University of Johannesburg’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi described the 2026 Student Representative Council (SRC) at their Inauguration Ceremony on Friday, 20 February 2026.

He encouraged the SRC members to lead with integrity throughout their term, reminding them that leadership was about service.
“You will one day go on to graduate and grow into bigger leadership roles making decisions for this country. We can choose to act in an ethical or unethical way, choose ethical behaviour, choose to act with integrity. I urge you to become leaders who lead with heart and care.”
Prof Mpedi also warned against corruption and ill discipline, reminding the new representatives that in order to lead others, they had to first learn to lead themselves.
Dr Nell Ledwaba, Senior Director of Student Affairs inaugurated the SRC members administering the oath for the campus representatives and the central SRC.
Professor Bongani Ngqulunga, Senior Executive Director: University Relations, Student Affairs, and UJ Sport said the inauguration was a moment of celebration, not only introducing a new cohort but also acknowledging the most successful SRC election in the history of the University.

“This inauguration is particularly sweet,” said Prof Ngqulunga, referencing the resolved SRC student matters from the previous year. “That moment has passed and we have put it behind us, starting 2026 on a positive note.”
Prof Ngqulunga thanked the SRC President Mr Lehumo Dibakoane for his leadership adding that the collaboration between student leadership and senior management was key to resolving pressing matters faced.
“The baton has been passed on to you now, so represent the students with integrity. We are ready to assist in student matters and are committed to addressing the issues, within the students interest.”
Mr Dibakoane reiterated Prof Ngqulunga’s words highlighting that the student representatives were the most valid and legitimate voices for the students and that they should work with senior leadership, which serves as a moral compass.

“Many leaders are not known for what they stand for – hence the conclusion leadership has become a rare commodity.”
He said the Council would sharpen ideas, and stand in one voice while maintaining their distinct self.
“This work is not for ourselves – we rise by bringing our students and people with us. This institution has shaped and refined us and become an integral part of who we are. We are for advocacy not antagonism.”
Mr Dibakoane added that true leadership could never be silenced and said the SRC is committed to advocating for the sustainability of the University.
“We have a dynamic task and we are ready for it.”
Mr Andrew Munyai, Director of Student Life and Governance, gave the vote of thanks.
The event, held at the Ubuntu Chambers on the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus (APK), was attended by members of UJ’s Management Executive Committee (MEC), including Professor Refilwe Phaswana-Mafuya (Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation), Professor Sehaam Khan (Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic) and Professor Bettine van Vuuren (UJ Registrar).
The programme was directed by Senior Director of University Relations, Dr Phumelele Dhlomo. Other guests in attendance included Mr Elton Hart, Manager of the UJ SWC Law Clinic, staff and the UJ Choir who provided the entertainment.
