The 2024 University of Johannesburg (UJ) Sport Awards are set to be a thrilling event, featuring a host of talented student-athletes vying for top honours. With a mix of experienced and emerging athletes in the running, the competition promises to be intense.
Though there are six experienced returnees, the majority of the nominees for the 2024 UJ Sport Awards edition are student-athletes who make their maiden appearance this year.
The 2024 UJ Sport Awards, which will be held on 1 November 2024 in Houghton, will be highly contested and competitive. Club member Cheswill Johnson and student-athletes Caitlin Rooskrantz, Lythe Pillay, Joviale Mbisha, Cornelia Mupenda and Yané van der Merwe are the only athletes who have featured in the 2023 edition of the Awards.
New faces dominate nominations:
“This year’s awards feature a fresh crop of nominees, with only six athletes returning from the 2023 edition. This highlights the vibrant and competitive nature of UJ’s sports programmes. The competitive nature of the UJ Sport Awards means that we have had students who competed at national championship and representing South Africa in international competitions, including the Olympics, Paralympics, World Senior and Junior Championships, as well as other international university events.
“It is exciting to also see many young and new faces nominated in high numbers – that speaks volumes in terms of the UJ sport programmes,” says Ms. Nompilo Zondi, Senior Manager: UJ Sport Clubs.”
