Bosmont, a suburb in the western part of Johannesburg, has a unique history that reflects the broader narrative of South Africa’s socio-political landscape. As South Africa celebrates 30 years of democracy, the Bosmont community reflects on a journey marked by resilience, collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship. This milestone highlights a crucial achievement: upholding Section 24 of the South African Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to a healthy environment.
This constitutional right ensures not only the protection of the environment for present and future generations but also the prevention of pollution, promotion of conservation, and the fostering of sustainable development.
In collaboration with the University of Johannesburg’s Process, Energy and Environmental Technology Station (UJ PEETS), the Bosmont-based NGO Comm-unity Green Projects (CGP) has made significant progress in addressing local environmental challenges while promoting social cohesion and community empowerment. Together, they have enhanced the community’s awareness of their constitutional rights and identified practical actions to safeguard their environment. A recent community perception survey revealed that 30.2% of residents believe their tap water is unsafe to drink, underscoring the urgency of continued efforts to improve environmental conditions.
Collaborative events, such as the Green Fest, have played a pivotal role in raising awareness and sparking discussions around conservation, sustainability, and community-driven solutions. These initiatives have brought together residents, industry stakeholders, and academic partners, creating a platform for co-designed solutions to the area’s pressing environmental issues.

Through community-driven research initiatives like water quality monitoring and air pollution assessments, Bosmont and UJ PEETS have taken proactive steps to address urgent environmental concerns. These programmes have not only provided residents with valuable insights into their surroundings but also highlighted critical areas for improvement. This partnership has empowered the Bosmont community with a sense of ownership, allowing them to actively influence UJ PEETS’s research agenda.
Looking ahead, the Bosmont community, with continued support from UJ PEETS, remains committed to tackling environmental challenges. Future initiatives will focus on educational outreach, community cleanup campaigns, and fostering partnerships with local businesses to promote sustainable practices. These efforts will further solidify Bosmont’s role as a model for community-led environmental action, ensuring that it continues to be a beacon of progress for generations to come.
