“The South African Nursing Council (SANC) has a number of very important roles in South Africa. The first is to be a body entrusted to set and maintain standards of nursing education and practice in the country. The second most important role is that it has to establish, improve and control conditions, standards and quality of nursing education and training, stated Ms Hafisa Ally, Lecturer: Department of Nursing within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Dr Ally has been appointed, by the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, to the board of the South African Nursing Council (SANC), taking into account her qualifications and expertise in Nursing Leadership and Professionalism matters.

“The appointment of Dr Hafisa Ally has been hailed as wonderful news to the nursing fraternity who believe that her leadership and uncompromising attitude to professional nursing standards and quality will be a major contribution to the benefit of the people of South Africa,” highlighted Prof Andre Swart, Executive Dean: Health Sciences.Dr Ally now forms part of a board member team that represent diverse areas of expertise. The South African Nursing Council mission aims to serve and protect health care users by regulating nursing and midwifery professions.

Says Dr Ally: “I am humbled yet delighted at having this great opportunity as a role-player to make a contribution to the transformation of the nursing profession in South Africa.”

The Board will serve as the accounting authority of the SANC, accountable to the Minster of Health. The Board will be responsible for, amongst others, good governance, strategic direction, risk management, and management of performance information. The Board, as the custodian of good governance, will be expected to act in the best interest of the SANC in managing its affairs.
