The University of Johannesburg (UJ) invites members of the media to the inaugural Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka Annual Lecture. The inaugural lecture comes at a time when South Africa commemorates the 70th Anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria against the pass laws.
To be held under the theme Women Driving Societal Impact: Legacy, Leadership, and the Future, this flagship event will feature veteran anti-apartheid activist, diplomat, and former Chairperson of the Commission on Gender Equality, Her Excellency Ambassador Thenjiwe Mtintso, as the distinguished guest speaker.
Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka is an internationally renowned leader, gender equality champion, and human rights advocate. She served as United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women (2013–2021), where she launched global transformative initiatives such as HeForShe and mobilised historic multi-billion-dollar investments for women’s rights through Generation Equality.
Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka made history as the first woman to serve as Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa (2005–2008). Before that, she held cabinet portfolios as Minister of Minerals and Energy and Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry.
Her Excellency Thenjiwe Mtintso is one of South Africa’s most formidable freedom fighters, gender theorists, and seasoned diplomats. A former journalist and student leader in the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) alongside Steve Biko, Ambassador Mtintso faced severe torture, detentions, and banning orders under apartheid. She has represented South Africa globally as Ambassador to Cuba, Italy, Romania, Spain, and High Commissioner to Malawi.
The lecture will provide a critical platform for intergenerational dialogue, passing the baton of transformative leadership to young leaders, scholars, and future decision-makers at UJ. It will critically examine how women continue to shape policy, technology, social justice, and higher education in a changing global landscape.
