UJ to host 34th SAARMSTE conference focusing on maths, science and technology research and education

As the country reflects on matric learner performance and prepares for the academic year ahead, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) will host the 34th Annual Conference of the Southern African Association for Research in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (SAARMSTE) from 19–22 January 2026.

The SAARMSTE 2026 conference brings together leading voices in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (MSTE) to address the pressing challenges affecting teaching quality, learner outcomes and future skills development. The event will draw researchers, policymakers and practitioners from across Africa, Europe, America, Australasia and the Far East. Taking place at the very start of the academic year, this conference arrives at a pivotal moment for South Africa’s education sector.

UJ is honoured to welcome the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Siviwe Gwarube, who will deliver the opening address on 19 January 2026. The minister’s participation underscores the importance of research-driven dialogue in shaping educational policy and supporting learners and teachers during a time of national reflection and renewal.

SAARMSTE, a respected and influential organisation  advances research in MSTE through the following aims:

  • To advance Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (MSTE) in Southern Africa.
  • To foster a community of researchers committed to strengthening MSTE.
  • To promote research that informs and improves MSTE programmes to meet present and emerging societal needs.

This year’s conference is especially significant as South Africa grapples with global shifts in STEM-related fields and the need to prepare learners for a rapidly changing technological world. New research presented at the conference will offer insights into improving teaching strategies, curriculum design, digital integration and equitable access to quality education – key factors for strengthening the national education system.
