Students in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) raised more than R7 300.00 for The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). The annual Shavathon, which is in support of the fight against cancer, took place at the C2 Lab 124 on Kingsway campus on Friday, 1 March 2013.
Hundreds of UJ staff and students braved the clipper and spray painted their hair in vibrant colours in support of the CANSA’s cause and the 10th anniversary.
The UJ CANSA Shavathon facilitated by UJ’s Biochemistry Cancer Research Group, highlights the group’s research project where they analyse and study the ability of novel metal compounds and indigenous medicinal plants to induce cell death in cancer cells.
Dr Marianne Cronje, Head of Department: Biochemistry and Supervisor: Cancer Research Group in the department, and Ms Siobhan Jenkins initiated the campaign in 2012.
