Chantel Spengler completed her BA Honours degree in Interior Design in 2025, graduating on Thursday, 19 March, 2026.

During her Honours year, she developed a comprehensive design project focused on the renovation of the SAVF Môreglans Old Age Home in Krugersdorp, Johannesburg. The project aimed to enhance the quality of life of elderly residents through considered and responsive interior design solutions.
Reflecting on her work, Chantel explains, “My project explored how spatial design, accessibility, materiality, and social spaces can support the physical, emotional, and social well-being of elderly residents.”
The design incorporated Cape Dutch architectural elements, creating a strong connection to the building’s local heritage while fostering a sense of familiarity, comfort, and belonging for its users.
Throughout her academic journey, Chantel has demonstrated consistent growth and a deep commitment to her studies. Her work reflects the development of a thoughtful and empathetic design approach, with an increasing ability to critically engage with the social and human dimensions of interior environments. By addressing the specific needs of users, her projects highlight a strong commitment to meaningful and socially responsive design.
“What I have enjoyed most about university life is growing and understanding who I am, through my academic journey. I loved the sense of freedom and acceptance, meeting new people, and appreciating their work. Seeing how other people approached design inspired me and gave me fresh perspectives.”
This helped her discover her own strengths and creativity as an Interior Design student.
Chantel chose to study at UJ because it is the only institution offering the Interior Design programme she wished to pursue. She was drawn to UJ’s strong academic reputation and its relevance to industry practice. She had also heard that UJ graduates are highly regarded by employers, which further reinforced her confidence in the institution.
Her advice for first-year students is that it’s okay to feel shy or a little lost at first.
“The important thing is to keep going, continue pursuing what you are passionate about, always do your best, and never look down on yourself or your work. No matter what people say or what critiques you receive, take it as an opportunity to gain more knowledge. Do what makes you happy and comfortable, and most importantly, enjoy every moment of your studying journey.”
Chantel continues her academic journey as a Master’s student in 2026, further developing her interest in how interior environments can positively influence human well-being through research-informed design.
Her plans are to complete her master’s degree and pursue a career in interior design, with a focus on creating innovative and inspiring spaces. Her dream is to one day start her own company, contribute meaningfully to the field, and achieve success while making a positive impact through design.
