UJ cum laude graduate Haneefa Ismail designs for healing and connection

Haneefa Ismail completed her BA Honours degree in Interior Design in 2025, graduating cum laude last month. Her academic journey reflects a story of growth, perseverance, and dedication, marked by a confidence in both her thinking and design practice.

Her Honours project explored the needs of patients, staff, and families, with a focus on designing interior environments that foster connection, dignity, and long-term recovery. Responding to the diverse social context of Johannesburg, the project embedded inclusivity within the spatial experience, demonstrating how design can play a meaningful role in supporting care and healing.

Reflecting on her approach, Haneefa explains, “Themes of growth and healing are expressed through honest, natural materials, with brick serving as both structure and symbol, grounding users through familiarity and resilience.”

The outcome illustrates how user-informed, contextually grounded design can support spatial justice and offer a dignified model of care for low to middle-income communities.

Haneefa has a strong interest in how thoughtful design shapes the way people experience the spaces around them. Her academic development across her degree has been especially notable, as she progressed from an uncertain beginning into a highly motivated and dedicated student. This commitment to excellence ultimately culminated in her graduating with distinction.

The most valuable outcome of Haneefa’s university experience was undoubtedly the friendships she formed, along with the lecturers who became like motherly figures. “They were always there to offer guidance and support, extending beyond just coursework”, she says. She also values the knowledge and skills she gained, particularly the attention to detail and thoroughness that she continues to carry with her today.

Her advice to first-year students beginning their tertiary education journey is to never let disappointing marks discourage them, but rather to keep trying and give their best in everything they do, as it is always worth it in the end.

“Showing initiative, maintaining curiosity, and having a genuine drive to seek knowledge and create will ultimately lead to success,” she said.

Outside of her academic work, Haneefa is a semi-professional gamer with a deep love for sport, interests that contribute to her strong sense of focus, discipline, and strategic thinking. From a young age, she was drawn to art and architecture, fascinated by form and creative process. Over time, this curiosity developed into a passion for interior design, where she finds meaning in the details that bring spaces to life.

In the future, Haneefa would like to spend a few years gaining experience at an interior design firm to further develop her skills. She and her father have always shared a dream of designing people’s homes, offering a full-service approach that includes elements such as custom kitchen cabinetry and wardrobes. Having already worked on several personal projects together, including her own home, she has developed a strong interest in pursuing this direction professionally.

Beyond design, Haneefa enjoys caring for her collection of twenty plants, reflecting her appreciation for patience, growth, and nurturing environments. These qualities resonate strongly in her design thinking and approach. Her journey stands as a compelling reminder that dedication and perseverance can transform uncertainty into achievement.
