An international delegation of academics from Hoger Beroepsonderwijs ICT-Opleidingen (HBO-I) engaged with UJ academics in various Information Systems and Computer Science disciplines to foster collaboration. On Monday, 9 and Tuesday, 10 March 2015, UJ academics in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hosted HBO-I to showcase how UJ is training and educating ICT students across the various disciplines.
The international delegation from HBO-I is benchmarking with UJ and the University of Cape Town (UCT) because of the two institutions’ strategic positions in South Africa. UJ was chosen for being in the centre of the continental and global economic hub, Johannesburg, where all the financial institutions are located. UCT was chosen due to its positioning close to Stellenbosch which is perceived as SA’s Silicon Valley. Also, UJ and UCT are the biggest consumers of ICT students in South Africa.
“The HBO-I delegates are visiting countries on a bi-annual basis to gather information on how to strengthen ICT education. The purpose of the SA visit is to uncover possibilities for student and staff exchange, research collaboration and the placement of Dutch interns at SA companies,” says Professor Carl Marnewick, Head of Department: UJ’s Applied Information Systems in the Faculty of Management.
This consultation took place at UJ’s Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus’ Applied Information Systems Department. Key industry and academic role-players attended the consultation.
UJ academics in the Departments AIS, IKM and CSSE played a vital role in the engagements. The goal of the consultations were in line with UJ’s vision for international collaboration and student and staff exchange.
UJ’s Prof Marnewick, who was part of the consultations, has recently participated in the writing of an international standard on Portfolio Management. The document was published by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the title is “Project and programme portfolio management”. This was the second international standard from a South African team, following the publication of the international standard for Project Management (ISO/SABS21500).
Prof Marnewick represented the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).
