The University of Johannesburg (UJ) proudly congratulates four of its esteemed researchers on their appointment as members of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). The newly appointed members include Professors Hassina Mouri, Tankiso Moloi, Kevin Durrheim, and Jan Nordström, all recognised for their significant contributions to their respective fields.
Professor Hassina Mouri
Prof Mouri, from the Department of Geology in UJ’s Faculty of Science, is the UNESCO Chair in Medical Geology in Africa, the first of its kind globally. A National Research Foundation (NRF) B-rated researcher, she has successfully supervised numerous postgraduate students. Prof Mouri was recently elected President of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), making history as the first female to hold this prestigious position in the geoscience community.
Professor Tankiso Moloi
Prof Moloi is a Professor of Accountancy at the Johannesburg Business School and serves as Chair of the International Conference of Accounting and Business (iCAB). He also holds the Education, Training, and Development Practices (ETDP) SETA Research Chair. In recognition of his contributions to the field, Prof Moloi was awarded an NRF C-rating in 2022.
Professor Kevin Durrheim
A Distinguished Professor of Psychology in UJ’s Faculty of Humanities, Prof Durrheim leads the UJ Methods Lab, which promotes open access to science in Africa. He is the co-author and editor of several books, including The Routledge International Handbook of Discrimination, Prejudice and Stereotyping (2021), Qualitative Studies of Silence (2019), Race Trouble (2011), and Racial Encounter (2005). His exceptional research has earned him an NRF A-rating.
Professor Jan Nordström
Prof Nordström is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at UJ, specialising in Computational Mathematics. His research focuses on initial boundary value problems, particularly the fundamental role of boundary and interface conditions on well-posedness and stability.
Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, commended the appointments, stating, “Being selected as an ASSAf member is a testament to the individual’s significant contributions to their discipline and the impact of their work. We are incredibly proud that this year, four of our own researchers have been appointed to ASSAf.”
These appointments reflect UJ’s commitment to advancing excellence in research and fostering global collaboration across disciplines.
