Life and Environmental Science contributes greatly to the society of South Africa, as mining plays an important role in our economy. The course helps one better understand the field and be able to come up with better solutions for the world relating to natural resources. The geographical aspect assists in controlling the never ending battle of human population, destruction and replenishing methods of the natural environment,” said the newly graduated Gumede.

The young Gumede started his schooling at Mthwalume Primary School and later finished at Port Shepstone High School in KZN. He is currently the chairperson of the Afslaan Sports Residence at the University’s Kingsway Campus.

In addition to lessons learnt at UJ, he attributes his family values for improving his independence and teaching him to make smart decisions to better himself academically, socially and financially. He says that he is now better spoken as he continues to build his network and personal branding.

“I was able to overcome challenges such as having four tests in one week with assignments in between, and field trips as well, through prayer and believing that I had the capability to complete it without having to write a sick test,” said Gumede.

He is currently doing his Postgraduate certificate in Geographical Information Systems in pursuit to complete two honours degree in Geography and Geography.
