Top Billing presenter to host UJ Idol finale

The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Alumni Network continues to prove that UJ can hold its own when it comes to showcasing student and alumni talent.
This year, Top Billing presenter and UJ alumnus Simba Mhere returns as host of the UJ Idol final, taking place at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus Sanlam Auditorium on Monday, 16 September. After a series of auditions at the four UJ campuses, UJ Idol will culminate in a final show where all the finalists will fight for the title of the 2013 UJ Idol.
Mhere is no stranger to the UJ Idol competition and the Alumni Network. Following his win during the 2010 Top Billing Presenter Search, Mhere was named one of the UJ Alumni Network Goodwill Ambassadors – UJ alumni who command respect countrywide, and play a key role in advocacy and fundraising programme efforts.
The UJ Idols competition was introduced by the Alumni Network to Current and Residence Student Programmes, as a way of showing a more vibrant student experience with a “fun” side to it.
“In order to not only focus on the academic side of student life, the Idols competition was introduced as a “fun” leg. And, also because there is nothing more memorable to students than to see their friends celebrated. We wanted to contribute to a vibrant student experience and make sure students get recognition for non‐academic talents,” says Dr Zodwa Magwenzi, Senior Manager for Strategic Partnerships at UJ.
Popular 5FM DJ and South African Idols judge Gareth Cliff returns as one of the judges for this year’s final showcase. Audiences can also expect to be entertained by the likes of 2012 UJ Idol finalists Kiku de Buck, 2012 SA Idols winner, Khaya Mthethwa, and singer/songwriter Zarcia Zacheus.
Prizes up for grabs include UJ Alumni bursaries, BlackBerry smartphones, laptops and iPads.
