Thinkers and changemakers gather for UJ’s TRCTI conference on transformative innovation

This week (February 26-29, 2024), the University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosted the Transformative Innovation for Sustainable Development (TRCTI) conference. Themed “Transforming Africa: Innovating Our Way Towards Sustainability,” the conference explored innovative solutions for Africa’s sustainable development journey.

This event is organised by the DSI/NRF Trilateral Chair in Transformative Innovation, the 4IR and Sustainable Development, with its core collaborating networks: SPRU, ACTS, Open AIR, TIP-SA, TIPC, DSI and NRF. This event brings together a diverse ensemble of thinkers, leaders, innovators, and change-makers from across the globe.

The week-long conference will feature engaging discussions on inclusive innovation, digital transformation, and green and just transitions, offering participants actionable strategies for driving sustainable change in Africa.

Opening the dialogue: emphasising Africa’s potential

UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi set the tone for the conference during the opening session on Monday, 26 February 2024. Prof Mpedi emphasised the pivotal role of innovation in fostering sustainable development in Africa, citing the continent’s youthful population and abundant natural resources as key assets.

Distinguished guest speakers, including Her Excellency Ambassador Jacquiline Kenani, His Excellency Ambassador Antony Phillipson, and Dr Phil Mjwara, shared valuable insights during the keynote addresses of the conference opening. Notably, renowned economists Professor Carlota Perez and Professor Marianna Mazzucato delivered keynote addresses, focusing on topics ranging from business innovation to the importance of internet access and the role of innovation in economic growth.

Addressing economic challenges

Prof Perez highlighted the significance of internet connectivity for economic development, highlighting its role in fostering global connectivity and inclusivity. She also pointed out the potential benefits of dual economies for developing countries, urging governments to prioritise internet access for all citizens.

Prof Mazzucato echoed the call for innovators to take a central role in problem-solving, stressing the need for a re-evaluation of current approaches to innovation. She stressed the importance of directionality and outcomes-oriented policy frameworks, as well as the role of finance and citizen engagement in driving sustainable development.

Professor Erika Kraemer-Mbula outlined the mission and key objectives of the TRCTI Chair, emphasising its dedication to developing academic leaders, promoting policy experimentation, cultivating partnerships, and nurturing a community focused on inclusive and sustainable development.

The TRCTI conference serves as a platform for robust discussions and collaborations aimed at driving transformative innovation for sustainable development in Africa. As the conference draws to a close, participants are poised to carry forward the momentum gained towards realising a more prosperous and sustainable future for the continent.
