Mathe, Ngubane, Sithole receive best awards at 2026 SPAR Challenge Test Series

The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Netball trio received three best awards at the end of the SPAR Challenge International Netball Test Series played in Johannesburg on Sunday, 1 February 2026. After a gruelling three-match battle against the world-renowned Vitality Roses (England), the SPAR Proteas delivered a masterclass in the series decider.

South Africa’s national team surged to a 65-50 last match victory, clinching the series 2-1 and igniting a firestorm of celebration across social media and national broadcasts. Since the opening whistle on Thursday afternoon, January 29, the Proteas have shown a grit and tactical evolution that suggests they are more than ready for the global stage.

“All glory to God – this one means everything,” said UJ student-athlete and SPAR Proteas player, Owethu Ngubane, after winning the series with the national side. Ngubane was named the Test Series’ Best Shooter, while her teammate and fellow player at UJ Netball was named Best Mid-Court Player. Additionally, the UJ Senior Men’s Netball Team’s captain, Kwandile Sithole, was also in action in the SPAR Challenge men’s curtain raiser matches, earning himself the Best Mid-Court Player award played against the Australians.

Fans, parents, friends and netball administrators filled the Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg on Sunday, giving the SPAR Proteas the extra support from the stands.
