Fresh slate, bold ambitions for UJ Men’s football team in 2026/27 Gauteng ABC Motsepe League season

Carrying the energetic momentum of a strong Varsity Football campaign, the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Senior Men’s Football Team has kicked off their 2026/27 Gauteng ABC Motsepe League campaign with clear intent, renewed grit, and elevated ambitions.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Karabo Mogudi and his technical team, the Orange Army is determined to sustain this early positive drive through the opening fixtures of 2026 before carrying the momentum into the second half of the season in January 2027.

Reflecting on the team’s evolution, the Orange Army endured a challenging 2025 campaign, closing out the previous league cycle in 10th position on the final log standings. However, Coach Mogudi remains adamant that the current squad possesses the requisite depth and character to rewrite the narrative this season, drawing confidence from the resilience displayed during their recent national university run.

“The lessons learned from the previous season have been instrumental in reshaping our tactical discipline and mental fortitude,” says Mogudi. “Our performance in the Varsity Football tournament demonstrated that when we play to our strengths and execute our game plan with intensity, we can compete with the best. We are approaching this ABC Motsepe League season with a fresh mindset, higher standards, and the determination to finish significantly higher up the log.”

UJ signaled their intentions early, launching their provincial league campaign with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Tshwane South TVET College at the AW Muller Stadium on Saturday, 3 October 2026, to collect all maximum three points. They followed up the thrilling home opener with a solid away point, battling to a goalless 0-0 draw against Free Agents FC at the Eersterus Stadium on Friday, 9 October.

This encouraging start builds on an impressive 2026 Varsity Football campaign where the UJ Men’s Team spent six consecutive weeks atop the log standings during the round-robin stage. Demonstrating clinical form throughout the tournament, UJ recorded five wins, one draw, and two defeats. Although their championship pursuit came to an end in the semifinals against the University of Pretoria, their tactical dominant run throughout the tournament earned high praise.

Looking ahead at the dual challenge of balancing collegiate and provincial competition, Coach Mogudi highlights the strategic vision for the squad:

“While exiting the Varsity Football tournament at the semifinal stage was tough to swallow, the consistency we showed throughout the group stage gave us a blueprint for success,” Mogudi notes regarding the team’s future roadmap. “The ABC Motsepe League is a grueling competition that demands adaptability and squad depth. Our objective now is to sharpen our execution in front of goal, maintain defensive stability, and ensure every player understands their role as we push for top honors heading into 2027.”

With four points already secured from their opening two fixtures, the Orange Army looks poised to make a memorable impact on the 2026/27 Gauteng ABC Motsepe League season.
