On Saturday, 30 May 2026, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) will welcome the public to lace up their sneakers for a cause that transcends the finish line. The Steps 2 UJ Future Forward Fun Run returns for its landmark 10th anniversary, turning the crisp morning air of Auckland Park into a catalyst for academic opportunity.
This event is open to the public.
What began as a local initiative has grown into a premier fundraising fixture, having raised over R4 million to date. This year, more than 500 participants – ranging from elite athletes to families with prams – are expected to gather at the AW Muller Stadium to continue this legacy of community impact.
Running for the “Missing Middle”
While the event promotes fitness and health, its heartbeat is philanthropy. The funds raised are specifically dedicated to supporting academically deserving students who fall into the “Missing Middle” – those who do not qualify for government subsidies but lack the personal financial means to cover tuition fees.
By participating, runners are not just clocking kilometres; they are directly solving the future problems of access to higher education.
Event Highlights
Participants can choose their challenge with 10km, 5km, and 2.5km routes. Known for its festive energy, the event features a vibrant race village with jumping castles for children and a community-driven spirit.
The event has long enjoyed high-profile support. Previous participants include South Africa’s Minister of Higher Education and Training, Honourable Buti Manamela, and UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi.
This May run serves as the official preparatory event for UJ’s flagship main event coming this September. Whether you are a seasoned runner aiming for a personal best or a social walker looking to give back, your presence makes a difference. Join the UJ staff, alumni, and the broader Gauteng community to shape the future of the UJ students.
