UJ Athletics dominates CGA championships with 86-medal haul

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Athletics Club continued its impressive winning streak, securing a staggering 86 medals while hosting the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Track & Field Championships on 14 and 15 March 2025. The team’s performance, featuring juniors, U23, and senior athletes, resulted in 29 gold, 27 silver, and 30 bronze medals, solidifying their dominance.

The championships drew enthusiastic crowds, eager to witness standout performances from sprinters Udeme Okon, Tsebo Matsoso, Shirley Nekhubui, Precious Molepo, and Sabelo Dhlamini.

UJ athletes excelled in various disciplines, with notable gold medal victories in throws events. Bophelo Seoe triumphed in the women’s senior heptathlon javelin and shot put, while Kristiaan Bekker dominated the men’s senior hammer throw. Consistent performers like Leandri Holtzhausen (women’s senior hammer throw), Ursula Killian (women’s senior discus throw), Mignon La Grange (women’s U20 discus throw), and Keegan Nel (men’s senior shot put) further bolstered UJ’s gold medal count.

“We hosted a successful CGA Championship with outstanding performances, winning a total of 86 medals. This was a great event, and we are excited that our athletes’ performances led the runners-up by 32 medals,” said Roger Haitengi, Manager and Coach of the UJ Athletics Club.

In the jumps events, Dawid Afrikaner (men’s senior triple jump), Olivia Kalanga Muya (women’s triple jump), and Cheswil Johnson (men’s senior long jump) led the charge. Additional gold medals were secured by Rose Xeyi (women’s senior long jump), Tapiwa Junior Nyatondo (men’s U20 long jump), Abelwe Ndubeze(women’s U18 long jump), Justin Louwrens (men’s senior high jump), and Martha Nkosi (women’s U20 high jump).

The runners also delivered exceptional performances. Sabelo Dhlamini (men’s senior 400m hurdles), Naeem Razak (men’s senior 110m hurdles), Stella Anyanleke(women’s senior 100m hurdles), Ofentse Bokaba (men’s senior 300m steeplechase), Markus Delport (men’s U20 3000m), and Maxime Chaumeton (men’s senior 1500m) all secured gold medals, eliciting cheers from the crowd.

UJ athletes will continue their busy schedule, competing in the Athletics Grand Prix II at the UJ Athletics Stadium on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
