The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Senior Men’s Rugby Team received a significant psychological boost this week from one of the sport’s most iconic figures. John Smit, the celebrated former Springbok captain and Rugby World Cup winner, visited the dressing room at the UJ Rugby Stadium on Monday, 2 March 2026, to share insights ahead of the team’s FNB Varsity Cup clash against the North-West University (NWU) Eagles.
The impact of Smit’s presence was immediate. UJ went on to clinch their second home victory of the 2026 FNB Varsity Cup season, delivering a high-energy performance in Westdene that reflected the veteran’s call for excellence and unity.
Lessons in legacy and lifelong bonds

Addressing the squad in the inner sanctum of the stadium, Smit emphasized that the value of university rugby extends far beyond the final scoreline. He noted that the friendships forged in these locker rooms are the foundation for future success.
“Work hard and for each other, enjoy every relationship that you make, and be thankful to everyone who gives you the time and assistance to become the future professional and the best version of yourself,” Smit told the players. “This is the chapter that you’re going to miss the most later when you’ve stopped playing.”
He encouraged the young athletes to fully embrace the professional support systems provided by UJ – including coaches and physiotherapists – stressing that these resources are instrumental in helping players “go beyond the stages needed for growth.”
Education: The Hardest but Most Rewarding Tackle
Smit also offered a candid perspective on life after the final whistle. He urged the students to prioritize their academic pursuits, citing his own experience of returning to university as an adult. While he described the journey as difficult, he labelled it incredibly rewarding for the doors it opens and the life lessons it provides.
A Career of Versatility and Leadership

John Smit remains a titan of South African rugby. His career is defined by both longevity and a rare level of adaptability:
- Test Caps: 111 appearances for the Springboks between 2000 and 2011.
- Versatility: Primarily a world-class hooker, Smit also earned 13 test caps as a tighthead prop.
- Career Zenith: Captaining South Africa to victory at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
Today, Smit continues to influence the next generation through motivational engagements with university management and players. Transitioning successfully into the corporate sector, he currently serves as the CEO of SSG Security, a leading private protection services firm in South Africa.
