The Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings has announced that Ramakgahlela Betty Sebati, a young scientist from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), has been selected as one of nine participants from South Africa for the 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting. The meeting, dedicated to Physiology/Medicine, will take place in Lindau, Germany, from June 25 to 30, 2023.
International Representation at Lindau Meeting
In Lindau’s quest to continuously strive to increase the quality and internationality of the candidates, The scientific review panel has chosen 635 highly qualified young scientists from over 90 nationalities. The selected young scientists will experience and contribute to the unique atmosphere of the Lindau Meetings. With approximately 40 Nobel Laureates confirming their attendance, the event eagerly anticipates the outstanding qualifications and rich tapestry of nationalities that the participants bring to the table.
Ramakgahlela Betty Sebati’s Research Profile
Ms Sebati is a research assistant at the South African Medical Research Council/University of Johannesburg (SAMRC/UJ) – Pan African Centre for Epidemics Research (PACER) Extra Mural Unit, in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Her unwavering dedication and enthusiasm are channelled into ground-breaking research endeavours, predominantly focused on infectious diseases and epidemics.
Notably, Sebati’s investigations delve into the intricate interplay between cardiovascular disease and infectious maladies like HIV and COVID-19. With her pursuit of impactful research initiatives, Sebati is poised to make an indelible mark on the scientific landscape.
Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
The nominating partner, the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), recently, hosted a pre-travel meeting and science communication training for Ms Sebati and the other selected young scientists to prepare them for what to expect in the Lindau meeting in Germany.
This session allowed the participants to interact with alumni from previous Lindau Laureate meetings, providing valuable insights and experiences. Distinguished speakers from the DSI, partner organizations, and entities further enriched the meeting, equipping the young scientists for their upcoming Lindau experience.
During the six-day Lindau Meeting, participants will have the opportunity to attend lectures, engage in panel discussions, and interact with renowned figures in the field of physics. They will also have the privilege of meeting the Lindau Nobel Laureates. The young scientists, accompanied by Prof. Himla Soodyall, Executive Officer at ASSAf, will travel to Lindau, Germany, on June 23, 2023, to partake in this prestigious event.
