Prof Robert Engle, Nobel Laureate in Economics for developing methods to analyse economic time series with time-varying volatility (unpredictable financial market movements) will present a workshop and a public lecture at UJ’s College of Business and Economics (CBE) in February 2018.

Prof Engle, the Michael Armellino Professor of Finance at New York University Stern School of Business (NYU Stern), was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2003.

He is the Director of the NYU Stern Volatility Institute and a co-founding president of the Society for Financial Econometrics (SoFiE), a global non-profit organization housed at NYU. Before joining NYU Stern in 2000, he was Chancellor’s Associates Professor and Economics Department Chair at the University of California, San Diego and Associate Professor of Economics at MIT. He is a member of the National Academy of Science.

On 1 July 2017, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) opened the doors of its College of Business and Economics , delivering excellent, practice-orientated commerce education.

This move sees the CBE combine the innovative strengths of previous UJ Faculty of Management and Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences in the areas of teaching and learning, and knowledge creation to grow multi-faceted, entrepreneurial business leaders.

Aligned to the University’s strategic goals of being a Pan-African Centre of Excellence, the CBE will continue to provide high-quality academic and practical solutions to business and economic problems. In time, the CBE will no doubt position UJ as a leader in African commerce.
