Yanxia Sun, an Associate Professor and Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Science within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), has been selected as one of this year’s (2017) new members to join the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS).
SAYAS, with 20 founding members, was launched by the Department of Science and Technology and the Academy of Science of South Africa in 2011, with the aim to nurture the development of top emerging young academics and unlocking their collective potential to tackle national and global problems.
In August 2015, Prof Sun joined UJ’s Department of Electrical and Engineering Science as an Associate Professor and was soon holding the title of the Head of the Department.
Prof Sun’s work focuses on the fields of Evolutionary Optimisation; Automation; and Artificial Intelligence. Much of her work offers the potential for collaboration with other disciplines, helping to break the barrier between electrical and electronic engineering and other fields.
She is a NRF rated researcher and has published 42 papers including 14 ISI master indexed journal papers.
Prof Sun will be inaugurated into SAYAS on 11 October. The membership is highly competitive – only a small number of new members are inducted each year.
