Professor Lizelle Piater was inaugurated as Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on Monday, 9 October 2023. The inauguration ceremony was a celebration of Prof Piater’s outstanding academic achievements and her commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
Prof Piater presented her professorial inauguration address in front of UJ Registrar Professor Bettine van Vuuren; Professor Ian Dubery, Director of the Research Centre for Plant Metabolomics at UJ’s Department of Biochemistry; Professor Annah Moteetee, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, as well as invited guests.
In her inaugural address, titled “The Promiscuity of Biochemistry”, Prof Piater shared how her research journey has led to diverse fields of interest that, while seemingly unrelated, are connected by the common theme of biochemistry.

Prof Piater’s inauguration was a significant event for the Faculty of Science at UJ and for the South African scientific community. Her appointment as Professor of Biochemistry is a testament to her excellence in research and teaching, and her dedication to advancing the field of biochemistry.
Prof Piater’s journey through biochemistry exemplifies dedication, diversity, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Her impact on the fields of proteomics, plant-pathogen interactions, and venom research is undeniable.
Prof Piater concluded her inaugural speech by expressing deep gratitude towards her mentors in the field of Biochemistry. She also expressed appreciation towards past and present students, colleagues, and friends who have been sources of support and inspiration during her academic and professional voyage.

A distinguished academic career
Prof Piater is a highly respected member of the Faculty of Science at UJ and the South African scientific community. She is known for her excellence in research and teaching, her passion for mentoring young scientists, and her commitment to advancing the field of biochemistry.
She has published over 85 publications, is C2 rated by the NRF and a Scopus h-index of 26. She rose through the ranks at UJ to Full Professor in 2022 and is currently the HoD of the Department of Biochemistry.
