UJ’s Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) to Release Latest Research Results on Factors Determining Voter Choice

The Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA), based at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), will release the findings of its latest research project entitled: Factors determining voter choice in South Africa’s 2024 national general elections.

The research was conducted by Leila Patel, Yolanda Sadie and Jaclyn de Klerk.

This is the fifth wave of research which assessed the factors likely to determine voter choice. Researchers used the same theoretical model developed in the four previous waves of research in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

These are some of the themes covered in the research:

Perception of governance, corruption, party loyalty, support for a party leader and receiving a social grant.

A notable finding is that voter trust in the presidency of Cyril Ramaphosa increased by more than 20% over the five waves of research.

More social grant recipients also indicated that they would vote for opposition parties compared to those surveyed in the four previous years.

Close to 40% of South Africans are not in favour of a coalition.
