Research has shown that many school learners face challenges in STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), an issue that impacts their confidence and future career opportunities. This will come into sharp focus this week, when the University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosts the second annual STEAM Expo 2026. Organised under the theme AI and 21st Century Learning, the three-day event will bring together academic innovators, industry leaders, and high school learners to showcase the transformative power of multidisciplinary education.
Following the success of its inaugural edition, which brought together over 3,000 high school learners and featured 38 groundbreaking projects, the 2026 event continues UJ’s commitment to shaping future-ready leaders as aligned with its Strategic Plan 2035.
Building on the university’s leadership in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), this dynamic exhibition explores how STEAM, integrated with Artificial Intelligence, address critical societal challenges.

The programme features an inspiring lineup of keynotes, masterclasses, and hands-on activities across all three days.
UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, will deliver the official opening address on the first day. Some of the highlights that will be experienced by attendees include: live STEAM in Action demonstrations, masterclasses examining digital media and viral creative innovation, practical problem-solving sessions and interactive sessions connecting human origins with modern technology. Throughout each day, high school learners will explore dynamic faculty exhibition stalls accompanied by live entertainment.
