UJ subjects recognised by top global ranking system

The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) global stature and academic robustness have been given a significant boost through its inclusion of several subjects in the Top 400 in the 2018 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), released by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy on Tuesday, 17 July 2018.

Shanghai Ranking’s GRAS is one of the most prestigious global subject ranking systems in the world which uses only externally accessed, objective measures in its assessment of university performance. It is a ranking system that is heavily focused on research quality, impact, and collaboration.
Says Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UJ: “These results are yet another important endorsement of UJ’s growing international reputation. Alongside the University’s Top 100 ranking in the QS Top 50 (and Next 100) Under 50 University Ranking, this ShanghaiRanking result is received with great joy and celebration, as we continue to forge ahead and scale new heights.”
More than 1 600 institutions from 83 countries were evaluated across 54 subjects in five broad subject areas, including: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
UJ Hospitality & Tourism Management, housed within the School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH)in the College of Business and Economics (CBE), is ranked 20th in the world, a remarkable climb of 14 places from last year’s global ranking of 34.
UJ also excelled in six other subjects, namely:
Sociology: Top 150 in the world and is the only South African university ranked;
Communication: Top 300 in the world and is one of four South African universities ranked and is in joint second position in the country;
Political Sciences: Top 300 in the world and is one of six South African universities ranked and is in joint first position in the country;
Earth Sciences: Top 300 in the world and is one of five South African universities ranked and is in second position in the country;
Education: Top 400 in the world and is one of ten South African universities ranked and is in joint second position in the country;
Physics: Top 400 in the world and is one of four South African universities ranked and is in joint second position in the country.
