A 30 year-old University of Johannesburg student was injured during an attempted robbery in Doornfontein on the evening of Tuesday, 6 August 2013.
The incident happened outside University grounds while the student was walking back to the Doornfontein Campus with friends. Police are investigating the incident. As soon as word of the incident reached the University, UJ personnel were sent to the scene and arranged for the student to be promptly taken to a local hospital. UJ staff were at the hospital with the student until late last night. The injured student is receiving medical attention at the hospital and is in a stable condition.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor responsible for Student Affairs, Professor Tinyiko Maluleke, spoke to the student’s parents last night and extended to them the support of the University. Going forward, the University is pressing ahead with the tightening up of security systems on all UJ campuses.
“We are also exploring the provision of security personnel and student escorts in the streets surrounding our campuses. We are deeply concerned about the safety of our students, both on and off campus. This incident occurred off campus and with this in mind we are engaging both the Metro Police and the SAPS with a view to securing their support and collaboration in the provision of safety and security to students in the streets that are within the vicinity of our campuses,” says Professor Maluleke.
