UJ senior lecturer wins the 2012 Concrete Achiever of the Year

A Senior Lecturer in the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, and an enthusiast of concrete construction and teaching, Mr Deon Kruger, was bestowed with the award for the 2012 Concrete Achiever of the Year.

He won the award at the Inland Branch Chairperson’s breakfast at the Blue Valley and Country Estate in Midrand on Thursday, 22 November 2012.

Mr Kruger was acknowledged for his tireless work over the years of upbeat teaching in building-concrete to tertiary students. He is also recognised for incorporating the design and construction of concrete boats into UJ students’ curriculum. He has participated in and attended the Annual Concrete Boat Race day each year whenever students compete in the race. UJ students build the boats.

“I’m very proud of the work I do and the students I get to work with each year. It is a great reinvention that any ambitious concrete enthusiast and an academic dreams of. This is what makes me proud to be an educator and a researcher. I would like to thank UJ for giving me this chance to move back to the academic environment after my stint in operations,” says Mr Kruger.

The Concrete Society of Southern Africa (CSSA) annually celebrates its hardworking members in the concrete research field. Some of the activities planned for 2013 include:

  • A Continued Professional Development Technical seminar in Bloemfontein on Wednesday, 14th March
  • The Inland Fulton Awards gala dinner on Thursday, 13th June
  • A mini-seminar where post-graduate students will present their research
  • A bigger and better Concrete Boat race
