UJ Rugby Club hosts a successful fundraising Golf Day

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) rugby club held a successful fundraising Golf Day challenge in a bid to raise money for participating in the 2022 FISU World Student Games. This follows the Club’s two consecutive championships of the Africa Kampala Sevens Rugby tournament in Uganda in 2021 and a series of home games in the 2022 FNB Varsity Cup competition.

This event was held in collaboration with Parkview Golf Club on 15 March 2022, at Emmarentia Avenue, Johannesburg. Jean Pierre Coetzee, a student and cricket player, and Edwin De Waal (student) were the winners at the event, walking away with UJ branded umbrellas, custom UJ Rugby golf day caps sponsored by GP Lifestyle, portable Camp Master braai stands, among other prizes.

This was the first fundraising Golf Day event for the rugby club. While the organisers were raising funds for the club, they were also strengthening ties between the club and the current sponsors, create networking opportunities for the University’s alumni and businesspersons.

“This was a fun day. The facilities and the accommodation were great. I would like to thank the UJ Rugby and the Parkview Golf Clubs for hosting such a beautiful and successful golf event,” said De Waal.

UJ Rugby student-athletes and their families, alumni, potential business partners and as well as current sponsors, Mark White Nissan, First 15 breweries and GP Lifestyle attended the event.

“We started off quite rough due to some fatigue from the previous day. However, we were able to pick up the momentum and played a good game of gold. It was nice,” says Coetzee.

The Golf Day was a first for UJ Rugby Club, the event was hosted in a bid to attract potential sponsors and strengthen relationships with the current sponsors while the alumnus, student-athletes got to network over playing golf.

“We feel very honoured. It is the first 2022 UJ Rugby Golf Day and it means a lot for us as UJ students as well. Hopefully, this event is the first of many because we would be interested in participating again. Most importantly, I would like to thank the sponsors for getting involved. We will definitely make the most with the prizes we won,” adds De Waal.
