UJ ranked second in SA for Physical Sciences

The highly regarded Times Higher Education (THE) released its 2018 edition of its Subject Ranking in Physical Sciences on 27 November 2017, in which the University of Johannesburg (UJ) featured strongly. UJ has debuted this subject ranking in the 301–400 rank band globally (i.e. in the Top 400 in the world) for Physical Sciences, and is ranked second in South Africa and third in Africa.

This subject ranking previously (since 2010) only published the Top 100 universities for the Physical Sciences subject. This year (2018 edition), this particular subject ranking in Physical Sciences has been expanded to include the Top 500. The 2018 THE World University Rankings’ table for Physical Sciences subject employs the same rigorous and balanced range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall THE World University Rankings, but the methodology has been slightly recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

The subject ranking for Physical Sciences puts the spotlight on universities that are leading across mathematics, statistics, physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology and environmental sciences subjects.

With the addition of the Physical Sciences subject ranking accolade, UJ has racked up a respectable total of five subjects ranked by THE for the 2018 season. UJ achieved superlative scores for the Citations, International Outlook, and Industry Income performance metrics; with UJ coming out on top for the latter among its peer South African universities, in particular, outperforming the University of Cape Town (UCT).
