Valerie Bosch, a radiography student from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), packed her running shoes and participated in the Wings for Life World Run (WFLWR) charity event on Sunday, 3 May 2015.
The event took place simultaneously in 33 countries, at 35 different locations around the globe on. Miss Bosch participated in the Cape Town for the South African leg of the run.
“I am excited about the event! I don’t know what to expect, but I can’t wait as I will be doing my part in helping out those who can’t take part by running on their behalf and contributing to better their circumstances,” said Valerie, ahead of the big day.
The run does not have a finishing point as the participants are chased by the Red Bull vehicles 30 minutes into the run. The vehicles gradually increase pace until a single participant remains, who will be crowned as the Global Champion, with each country having a national champion.
Bosch represented UJ in the local competition, with her travel and entry sponsored by the University’s Alumni Network. The top-achieving third-year student from Randfontein, Gauteng, was chosen to take part because of her determination in helping out the needy.
WFLWR is a global running and wheelchair event that raises funds towards the spinal cord injury. Wings for Life is a non-profit organisation that was created in hope to better the life of the people with spinal cord injuries. There are over 250 000 traumatic spinal cord injuries every year, of which may result in death due to the lack of research.
