In an agonizing turn of events, the University of Johannesburg’s Senior Men’s Team saw their spectacular 2026 Varsity Football campaign end abruptly on Friday evening, 25 September. Having sat proudly atop the log standings since the tournament’s opening round, UJ’s title dreams evaporated at a packed, roaring UJ Soweto Stadium as visiting University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) snatched a dramatic 1-0 semifinal victory courtesy of an 86th-minute winner.
The result completes a devastating back-to-back double for the Stripe Generation over UJ, following their late round-robin clash, and sets up a mouth-watering all-Tshwane final between UP-Tuks and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

For bigger part of the campaign, UJ looked utterly unstoppable. The Orange Army launched their 2026 journey with a composed 1-0 opening victory against TUT in Soweto, following it up with another disciplined 1-0 triumph on the road against Durban University of Technology in Pietermaritzburg. Their momentum gathered serious pace in the third and fourth rounds, where they ground out a physical 2-0 home victory over the University of Limpopo before sweeping past Wits University 2-0 at the Wits Stadium.
Even when faced with adversity, UJ displayed the mettle of championship contenders. They recorded their first draw of the season against defending champions University of the Free State in a tight 1-1 thriller, only to bounce back emphatically in Round 6 with a commanding 2-0 performance against the University of the Western Cape.
However, the final fixture of the round-robin stage signalled a subtle shift in momentum. With semifinal hosting rights already safely locked away, UJ travelled to Tshwane and fell 1-0 to UP-Tuks – a result that handed the capital city outfit a massive psychological edge heading into their high-stakes semifinal rematch just a week later.
The atmosphere inside UJ Soweto Stadium on Friday night was electric, mirroring the intense pre-match social media fervour. Driven by the momentum of their previous week’s victory, UP-Tuks charged out of the blocks, dominating early possession and forcing the hosts into immediate crisis management. Less than sixty seconds after the opening whistle, UJ captain Yasidu Lifa received a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Edward Kolokoto, putting the home defence on high alert.
Wave after wave of early Tuks attacks tested UJ’s defensive resolve, but the hosts stood firm under heavy pressure. Slowly adjusting to the rhythm of the match, UJ began absorbing the barrage and launched sharp, dangerous counter-attacks of their own, proving that their Soweto stronghold would not be easily breached.

As the second half unfolded, the frantic early pace settled into a tight tactical stalemate. Both coaching staff adjusted their structures, prioritizing defensive compactness over high-risk offense. Despite the deafening home crowd attempting to rally the Orange Army, it was the depth of the UP-Tuks bench that ultimately swung the balance of power. With time running out, the visitors introduced fresh attacking legs in a calculated gamble that paid immediate dividends.
The decisive breakthrough arrived in the 86th minute. Super-sub Kholofelo Masenamela seized on space inside the penalty box after UJ goalkeeper Bayanda Mkhonza misjudged an aerial clearance, clinically slotting the ball into the back of the net. The bench erupted in wild celebration as the breakthrough shattered the goalless deadlock with just minutes remaining on the clock.
UJ launched a desperate, frantic surge throughout the remainder of the time, pushing every player forward in search of a miraculous late equalizer. Yet the resilient Tuks backline, marshalled brilliantly by FNB Player of the Match Jason Cox, weathered the storm until the final whistle.
As silence fell over the Soweto night, the visiting Stripe Generation celebrated a famous victory, booking their place in the championship decider against TUT, while UJ was left to ponder a remarkable season that slipped away at the final hurdle.
