In an impressive run of positive results, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Senior Men’s Football Team has won their third straight win, after defeating the University of Limpopo (UL) 2-0 on Friday, 21 August 2026. This result means that UJ maintain their stay at the summit of the Varsity Football log standings with nine points after Round 3 of the tournament. The Orange Army are set to play their fourth clash in a much-anticipated Joburg derby against Wits University on Friday, 28 August.
The game against the Limpopo outfit was a physical battle between the two teams, with the referee brandishing yellow cards to several players for tough tackles. At the interval, the official had booked UJ’s Njabulo Jele and Tshepo Mosieleng, alongside UL’s Moyahabo Makwea.
Despite controlling the tempo and pinning the visitors inside their own half, UJ struggled to convert dominance into clear-cut opportunities. Their best opening chance came in the sixth minute when Elijah Banda unleashed a powerful strike, but UL goalkeeper Mosa Mabitsela stood firm. The resulting goalless first half left the home crowd subdued.
The Orange Army shifted gears after the break, finding the clinical edge they lacked early on. Tshepo Mosieleng broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion. After UL failed to clear a loose ball, which fell to Mosieleng’s feet, the UJ striker unleashed a precise, low left-footed strike from outside the box into the bottom-left corner to find the back of the net.
The visitors launched a relentless pursuit for an equalizer, focusing their attack down the right flank through the blistering speed of Junior Matambo. However, UJ shot-stopper Bayanda Mkhonza produced a stellar performance between the sticks to keep UL at bay.

UJ sealed the victory deep in stoppage time. Sandile Nkosi whipped in a pinpoint cross from the left wing, allowing Mfundi Ngema to rise and cushion a header past Mabitsela to give UJ a second goal just before the referee’s final whistle.
UJ secured a hard-fought three points to keep their strong tournament momentum going and staying atop the table.
