Statement by UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Ihron Rensburg.
I am pleased to inform you that the disciplinary hearing of Prof Bhekie Mamba, Executive Dean: Science, on charges of dishonesty and gross negligence has now been concluded, and the chairperson of the hearing, a senior external legal expert, has submitted to me his findings and recommendations.
The chairperson of the disciplinary hearing found Prof Mamba, “not guilty of gross dishonesty and negligence,” however found that Prof Mamba, “had showed a lack of good judgment in the management of research funds, as a consequence of which he conducted himself in a manner inconsistent with a relationship of trust and confidence”.
In light of these findings, the chairperson of the disciplinary hearing recommended, among others, that a final written warning be served on Prof Mamba.
Prof Mamba has, voluntarily, decided to step down from his position as Executive Dean: Science.
In light of his internationally recognised contribution to water and nanotechnology research, through his well-established research group, and the valuable contribution that Prof Mamba can still make, I am also pleased that Prof Mamba has accepted, as of the 1st of April 2014, the position of Director: Institute of Water and Nano Technology at UJ.
