At the University of Johannesburg, diversity is more than the presence of students from different backgrounds. It is reflected in the languages spoken across campus, the traditions carried from home, the music that brings people together and the many cultural identities that shape the UJ student experience.
This diversity will take centre stage at the UJ International Festival 2026, under the theme “Bridging Cultures, Building Futures”, with the sub-theme “21 Years of Impact.” The annual celebration will bring together students and members of the university community for a vibrant showcase of culture, heritage, creativity and internationalism.
Celebrating the cultures that make UJ unique

With students from across South Africa and different parts of the world, UJ is home to a diverse range of cultures, languages and traditions. The International Festival provides an opportunity for this diversity to be celebrated while creating space for students to learn from one another.
From traditional attire and music to dance, food and cultural performances, the festival will showcase the many ways in which students express their identities and connect with their heritage.
For many students, culture is deeply connected to a sense of belonging. The festival therefore offers more than entertainment. It creates an opportunity for students to share aspects of their identities with others and to experience cultures beyond their own.
Bridging cultures through shared experiences

The theme, “Bridging Cultures, Building Futures,” speaks to the role of cultural exchange in creating a more connected university community.
The idea of a bridge is particularly significant. A bridge connects people, places and communities that may otherwise remain separated. In much the same way, cultural exchange can create opportunities for understanding, dialogue and collaboration among people from different backgrounds.
At UJ, where students come from different provinces, countries and cultural communities, these connections form part of the broader university experience.
The festival will provide a space where students can move beyond simply recognising diversity to actively experiencing it.
A celebration in many languages

One of the most visible expressions of cultural diversity is language. Across UJ’s campuses, students communicate in numerous South African and international languages, each carrying its own history, identity and cultural significance.
The International Festival will provide an opportunity for students to hear, speak, and celebrate these different languages, reinforcing the idea that diversity is not a barrier to connection but an opportunity to learn from one another.
Through performances, conversations, and cultural showcases, students will be encouraged to bring their identities into the shared UJ space.
What students can expect

Students attending the festival can look forward to a programme filled with cultural experiences, entertainment, and opportunities to engage with fellow students.
The celebration will feature cultural performances, music, dance, traditional attire and other forms of creative expression. Students will also have an opportunity to experience the richness of different cultural traditions and participate in activities designed to bring the UJ community together.
Students are encouraged to embrace the spirit of the festival by coming dressed in cultural attire and proudly representing their heritage.
Building a future through diversity

As UJ reflects on 21 years of impact, the International Festival offers an opportunity to consider the role that diversity plays in shaping the university’s future.
Building a future that is inclusive requires more than bringing different people into the same space. It requires creating opportunities for meaningful interaction, mutual understanding and respect.
The International Festival is therefore both a celebration of where students come from and an expression of the university community they are helping to build.
This year, UJ invites its students to cross cultural boundaries, share their stories and experience the richness of a community shaped by difference.
