The University of Johannesburg kneels in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter campaign that has sparked worldwide protests and condemnation of the violent deaths of a number of Black people, including George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks, killed by police in the USA.

In South Africa, about eleven people have died at the hands of law enforcement agencies during the Lockdown period. We are deeply saddened to note the loss of life precisely at a time when state action is intended to protect and defend the country’s inhabitants. As a South African university on an upward trajectory, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) prides itself on being dynamic, progressive and responsive. UJ adds its voice to that of educational institutions globally to condemn racism, prejudice, Afrophobia, intolerance and all forms of unfair discrimination. We commit ourselves to being part of the processes of social, ethical and political transformation within South Africa and globally.

We will strive to promote anti-racist, inclusive, respectful and equitable practices among staff, students and the wider UJ community, and align ourselves with the principles of social justice and freedom for all as enshrined within our constitution.
