“Former President Motlanthe’s belief in education as a catalyst for change resonates deeply with the University of Johannesburg (UJ)’s mission. His life’s work reflects the heart of what this Institution stands for: integrity, social justice, advancing education, and excellence in service to humanity.”
These were the words of the University’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi when the Institution conferred of an honorary Doctorate in Politics and International Relations on former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe on Tuesday, 18 March 2025.
Recognised for his decades of dedication to South Africa’s democracy, Motlanthe was celebrated as a statesman whose career has been defined by advancing equitable governance, economic reform, and social justice. From his tenure as President (2008–2009) to his role as Deputy President (2009–2014), his leadership helped shape the nation’s democratic journey. Beyond government, Motlanthe founded the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation, which focuses on digital literacy programs and inclusive socio-economic development, ensuring young South Africans are equipped to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
In his acceptance speech, Motlanthe addressed the complexities of the modern era, urging graduates and leaders to embrace integrity and critical thinking. “We live in an age where noise often drowns out wisdom. Narratives fuelled by half-truths and digital manipulation cloud our understanding,” he said. “Yet, this is precisely when we must champion independently thought and principled action. Intellectuals and policymakers hold the keys to reshaping these conversations.”

He also praised UJ’s role in fostering such values, calling the Institution “a beacon where difficult questions are welcomed, and where the courage to think boldly moulds future leaders.”
Prof Mpedi highlighted Motlanthe’s longstanding, though informal, ties to UJ, noting that the honorary degree formalises a shared commitment to progress. “While you have always been part of our community, today we celebrate your contributions with this distinction,” he said. “Your call for boldness echoes our own aspirations.
The ceremony coincided with UJ’s 20th anniversary, a milestone Motlanthe acknowledged warmly. “At 20, this University is both youthful and visionary. Its future is limitless,” he said.

Through his foundation and advocacy, Motlanthe continues to break barriers in education and equality. By honouring his legacy, UJ reinforces its dedication to nurturing leaders who prioritise humanity alongside academic excellence. Prof Mpedi concluded, “May former President Motlanthe’s example ignite the courage to question, challenge, and lead in every student who walks these halls.”
