The University of Johannesburg (UJ) proudly celebrates another distinguished milestone for Professor Alfred Z. Msezane, who has been recognised by the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) as a Black History Month Honoree on 3 February 2026.
Professor Msezane, who received an Honorary Doctorate from UJ in March 2025, is internationally acclaimed for his groundbreaking contributions to theoretical atomic and molecular physics. His pioneering work in electron–atom and electron–molecule scattering has significantly advanced global understanding of fundamental atomic interactions, influencing research across multiple scientific disciplines.

The NSBP recognition affirms a lifetime dedicated not only to scientific discovery but also to expanding access and opportunity within the physics community. Throughout his career, Prof Msezane has championed excellence, mentorship and representation, serving as an enduring inspiration to generations of Black scientists worldwide.
“Prof Msezane’s recognition is not merely a personal accolade — it is a testament to the calibre of scholars associated with our institution,” says Professor Annah Moteetee, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science. “His legacy of pioneering research, intellectual leadership and unwavering commitment to mentorship embodies the values and aspirations of the University of Johannesburg.”
Reflecting on the honour, Prof Msezane warmly acknowledged his association with UJ, noting that the University has brought him “great luck” since the conferral of his honorary doctorate.“I am happy to be associated with the University,” he said.
At his honorary doctorate ceremony last year, Prof Msezane expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, emphasising the transformative power of education and the pivotal role of educators in shaping future generations of scientists.
UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, previously commended Prof Msezane’s illustrious career as one defined by intellectual curiosity, perseverance and the relentless pursuit of knowledge — qualities that continue to inspire scholars across continents.
The NSBP honour further cements Prof Msezane’s standing as a towering figure in international physics. It also reinforces UJ’s commitment to celebrating excellence, advancing scientific scholarship and amplifying voices that have reshaped the global research landscape.
