The University of Johannesburg (UJ) continues to set the pace in the 2026 Varsity Sports tournaments, maintaining unbeaten runs across both women’s netball and men’s football through five rounds of play.
Following the UJ Senior Women’s Football Team’s title victory in August, both the Senior Men’s Football Team and the Senior Women’s Netball Team are building strong momentum toward the championship titles. With just two round-robin fixtures remaining, both sides remain firmly positioned to secure semifinal berths.
The UJ Men’s Football Team maintained their position at the top of the log standings with 13 points despite a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the visiting University of the Free State (UFS-Kovsies) at the UJ Soweto Stadium on Friday, 4 September. The match marked the first time this season that the Orange Army’s defense was breached with a penalty goal.
UJ Men will host their final home round-robin fixture against the University of the Western Cape (UWC) at 17:00 on Friday, 11 September, before traveling to Pretoria to face UP-Tuks on Friday, 18 September.
In a first-of-its-kind match, the UJ-UFS men’s Varsity Football match was preceded by the two universities’ Football Alumni Teams’ friendly match in which UJ lost 3-2 to UFS. UJ alumnus Lehlohonolo Majoro scored the two goals for the Orange Army.
The UJ Netball Team sustained their faultless campaign on Sunday, 6 September, claiming a decisive 50-40 victory over UFS-Kovsies Ladies at Wits University. The result marks UJ Netball’s fifth consecutive win of the tournament. The squad now turns its attention to the final group stage fixtures at Rembrandt Hall in Pretoria to play hosts UP-Tuks on Sunday, 13 September at 15:00. The next day, on Monday, 14 September at 19:00, they play against Eastern Cape side Nelson Mandela University (NMU-Madibaz) at the same venue.
Both teams remain on track to replicate the championship success of the Women’s Football Team as the tournament enters its decisive closing stages.
In Round 5 of the two tournaments, Sinenhlanhla Mkhonza and Cornelia Mupenda earned their second FNB Player of the Match awards each.
